Words as paint

Because exciting things are happening in our family,
my next few blog posts will be brief but, I hope,
meaningful to you personally as well as in writing your memoir.

  1. This concept of words as paint was a very illuminating one for me when I first realized it. I am terrible at drawing and painting, and kept taking art classes and feeling like a hopeless failure. The last art course I took was Abstract Expressionism, and at the end of each class the students explained what they had been trying to capture and express in their painting. As I listened, i realized that they were trying to do what I do with words! They wanted to say something, and not having skill with words, were trying to say it with paint. I felt much better, after that, realizing that I have the skill and facility with words to say what I want to say – which is what we all want. Those of us who can write are fortunate indeed, because we can convey what is inside us to others who care to read it, which is to listen to what we have to say.

  2. Your insights are so helpful, Samantha! I appreciate your wisdom about using words to express deep messages while others--those who cannot write--might express their messages through art. I'd never thought of it that way before. Thanks for the enlightenment. :)

    Blessings,
    Linda
